Analyze Golf Swing: Key Stages

Every swing whether it be for a long powerful drive or the shortest gentlest putt, shares the same key ingredients. Set up, take-away, downswing, impact, and follow through are common stages, if you analyze golf swing and see it step by step. Only the clubs that are used by players and the length of their swings vary.

Of course if we analyze golf swing, no two are the same and there are always differentiations on a theme, but the key elements as mentioned should be as common to your swing as to Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus or any other great golfers.

Analyze Golf Swing - Step By Step:

  • The set up: This is the basic address position, with shoulders and feet aligned parallel to the line of flight. Some golfers adopt a much more open position, but the other elements are common to all players.
  • The takeway: The first 24 in. or 60 cm. stage of the takeaway is crucial to the swing, helping to determine both its width and the clubhead's path during the swing. Mistakes here could lead to serious compensations later.
  • At the top: A good one piece takeaway and a full shoulder turn take the club to the top of the backswing, which is know as the slot. Here all the backswing elements combine to produce the ideal position from where to deliver the square blow to the ball.
  • Downswing weight transfer: This is where the club changes direction from backwards to forwards and the weight transfers onto the left side. It is vital that this move is smooth. Any jerkiness can throw the club off its correct arc or plane.
  • Point of impact: If you analyze golf swing, the impact position is the one common position among all the great players, no matter what the rest of the swing may look like. The position is very similar to that at address, except that the weight has moved to the left side.
  • Follow through: The impetus of the club through impact carries the club round in a free-wheeling motion. The follow through is a good indicator of the quality of the shot, with a high and balance finish highlighting a controlled swing.
